Life in Residence

The SMS residence community is a nurturing environment that empowers young women to develop academically, socially, and morally, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The residence community lives together in an environment that is friendly, tolerant, supportive. There are abundant opportunities to learn, lead, and grow. Individuals contribute their talents, voices, cultures, and perspectives to inspire one another.

Students who live on campus contribute extensively to residence life. They are encouraged to become critical thinkers and to voice their opinions. Their ideas and input are taken seriously and help to shape their experiences here.

Students may apply to be a “residence mentor,” a role model and leader within residence. Residence mentors receive training to support the house staff, help other girls through homesickness, and foster a strong community by strengthening peer relationships. Boarding students may also apply to join the Residence Council to organize community activities around spirit, outreach/service, and multiculturalism, and to liaise with the whole-school Student Council. Learn about residence activities...

The residence curriculum provides skill- and community-building activities, including off-site opportunities to explore new interests, build competence and confidence, and develop strong social bonds with peers. Learn about the residence curriculum...

Residence advisors (staff selected to work with students in small advisory groups) meet regularly with girls to discuss monthly values such as integrity, gratitude, and perseverance. They also help girls set goals, make plans and track progress, and work on a variety of life skills normally developed by home life. Learn about residence houses and staff...

Through these experiences students learn to strike a balance between academics, fitness, creative pursuits, and service to become well-rounded individuals with a clear sense of their strengths and interests by the time they graduate.
