Mrs. Waterfield has not only taught at SMS since 1996, but is also a SMS alumna, so she knows the Junior School inside and out. She’s a big fan of “bringing in life” to the classroom, finding out with her students why topics matter, or how to use the knowledge they just learned. A popular reoccurring project of hers is the classroom salmon tank, where the girls get to watch the growth of the fry into fish over the year, and then release them back into Goldstream River in the spring.
Math is a favourite subject of hers, especially hands on work like building models. She also enjoys teaching the Junior School student council, and incorporating elements of those leadership positions into classroom lessons. She places high importance on teaching social responsibility, whether it be how to be a part of the bigger community, or simply the significance of please and thank you. Students know that their teachers genuinely care about them at SMS, which she can relate to after her time as a student here.
Why SMS? “St. Margaret’s: a small school with a big heart. A place where lifelong friends can be cultivated and students can pursue their dreams with confidence and support.”
