On Saturday, February 4, twenty nine teams from across BC will converge on Victoria for a robotics rally. It’s the annual BC Regional Championship Tournament for FIRST LEGO League, and this marks the second year the event has been hosted by the new affiliate partner, St. Margaret’s School.

Each year’s tournament has a theme that challenges participating students to come up with inventive robot designs to solve a wide range of problems relating to real world issues. This year’s theme is Animal Allies. Robots are judged in their ability to complete specific missions like picking up a pig and putting on prosthetics, or safely relocating a shark in a tank.

Teams are also judged based on their solutions to improve a human-animal interaction of their choice. For example, one of SMS’s three all-girl teams were investigating an alternative colourant to replace a colouring currently used in food and cosmetics that is derived from a beetle – the group got very invested in saving insect lives.

This event is high energy and very colourful with great photo ops of students putting their robots through their paces on the specially designed LEGO courses. Although the event runs all day, the best photos and spectatorship is possible during the robot runs scheduled for 1:30pm to 3:30pm.
