MEET DR. DAWN RANNS

Dr. Dawn “Smith” Ranns pursued a degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training at Limestone University, where she excelled as a dual scholarship athlete in soccer and lacrosse. A trailblazer for Limestone women’s lacrosse, she became the program’s first—and only—four-time All-American and two-time Academic All-American, earning Hall of Fame honours in 2006.

Ranns earned a Master’s in Health and Exercise Science at Furman University in 2001, where she worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. She joined Limestone’s faculty in 2003, serving as Faculty Athletic Representative and coordinating clinical education for Health Science and Athletic Training programs. In 2018, she earned a Doctorate of Athletic Training from A.T. Still University, publishing research on concussion education and academic reintegration protocols.

Relocating to British Columbia in 2020, Ranns became SMS’s Athletic Coordinator and teacher, later advancing to Athletic Director in 2024. She has led SMS teams to success at BC Provincials and launched a female-focused strength and conditioning program. The Ranns family also runs a thriving Metchosin farm and champions lacrosse development on Vancouver Island, including organizing the inaugural Vancouver Island Girls Youth Lacrosse Tournament.

Ranns’ dedication to education, athletics, and community development continues to inspire and empower student-athletes while fostering the growth of lacrosse locally.
