EXTENDED MUSIC PROGRAM

As an extension of St. Margaret’s School's regular music program, the Extended Music Program offers both SMS and non-SMS students the chance to enhance their band or choir skills. We provide a wide range of private instrumental and vocal lessons, including guitar and strings. For those interested in Conservatory exams, we offer music theory classes aligned with the Royal Conservatory of Music requirements.

The program is perfect for students wanting to learn a new instrument or advance their current skills.

DR. MIKE KEDDY

PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR

Dr. Keddy brings extensive musical and educational experience to the program. He holds a PhD in Educational Studies (Music Education/Conducting) from the University of Victoria and is currently the Bands and Choir teacher at St. Margaret’s School. Additionally, he serves as Music Director for the University of Victoria Don Wright Symphonic Winds and the Greater Victoria Concert Band (Senior level).

As a percussionist, Dr. Keddy has performed in diverse venues, ranging from marimba soloist at Buckingham Palace to Symphony Orchestras and The Blue Devils World Champion Drum and Bugle Corps.

Douglas Henley

GUITAR AND UKULELE

Douglas Hensley, trained as a classical guitarist at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, holds B.M. and M.M. degrees. He has studied with prominent lutenists and Persian classical musicians, showcasing a diverse musical interest from Medieval to contemporary art music, classical Persian music, Beatles songs, and composition. Hensley has had over 70 works written for him and recorded with ensembles like Continuum Consort, Anima Medieval Music Duo, Ensemble Laude, Ensemble Giverny, Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, and Big Speck. He has performed with orchestras in San Francisco, Oakland, Marin County, Victoria, and Pacific Opera Victoria. In Victoria, he teaches at the Victoria Conservatory, St. Margaret's School, and privately.

JENNIFER TURNER

VOICE

Jennifer is a classically trained soprano with a Master’s in Vocal Performance from the University of Manitoba and a Vocal Pedagogy certificate from the Victoria Conservatory of Music. She has performed with Pacific Opera Victoria, Victoria Baroque, and other notable Canadian ensembles. Funded by the BC Arts Council and Early Music Vancouver, Jennifer continues to advance her training.

As a BC Registered Music Teacher, Jennifer teaches at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, St. Margaret’s School, and privately. She enjoys helping students of all ages develop healthy singing techniques and musical curiosity.

RYAN QU

FLUTE

Ryan, based in Victoria, is a recent University of Victoria graduate with degrees in Music and Education. An active multi-instrumentalist, he began his piano studies at age 3 and trained at Shenyang Conservatory from age 11. In Victoria, he expanded his expertise to include flute, piccolo, and trombone, performing with various ensembles. Awarded the Colleague Diploma by the Royal Canadian College of Organists in 2023, Ryan is the Interim Organist & Assistant Choir Director at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Music Specialist at St. Joseph’s School, and a community choir accompanist/conductor. He encourages students to embrace challenges in their musical journeys.

Tatiana Kostour

VIOLIN

Tatiana Kostour is a successful violin teacher in Victoria, serving on the string faculty at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and teaching from her home studio. She has recently joined the extended music program at SMS. Ms. Kostour holds a Master's degree in violin performance from Kiev Conservatory of Music (1991) and a Diploma in Performance from Wilfrid Laurier University (1999).

Ms. Kostour began teaching in 1984 and has guided many students and chamber ensembles to success in regional and provincial competitions. Her students have won Gold and Silver medals from The Royal Conservatory of Music exams and received scholarships from Youth Symphony orchestras and Canadian universities. Tatiana's dedication to music, warm personality, and meticulous teaching methods are reflected in the high-quality performances of her students. Before immigrating to Canada in 1993, Tatiana performed with the Kiev Radio and Television Symphony and various Canadian orchestras.

Kristine Beny

Piano

Kristine Beny is a highly dedicated and devoted teacher, renowned for her exceptional skills both as a piano instructor and accompanist. Her students consistently perform with confidence in recitals, music festivals, and exams, often achieving First Class Honours with Distinction. Many of her students have progressed to university and pursued careers in music.

Currently, Ms. Beny is a member of the Keyboard Faculty at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and teaches on campus at St. Margaret’s School in Victoria. She continues to motivate and inspire her students to reach their highest potential.

Channing Mar

Clarinet

Victoria-based clarinetist Channing Mar is a skilled solo and chamber performer, clinician, and private teacher. Known for her ability to blend tones in ensembles, she has played with the University of Victoria Wind Symphony, UVic Symphony Orchestra, Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, and the Victoria Symphony. Channing earned her Bachelor of Music from UVic in 2021 and is now studying at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. She enjoys teaching students of all ages, creating a positive and fun environment for musical exploration.

Sylvan Wilkinson

Saxophone

Sylvan Wilkinson is a third-year music performance (BMus) student at the University of Victoria, specializing in saxophone. They play alto and soprano saxophones in the UVic Wind Symphony and a saxophone quartet. Sylvan has won the Roberto and Mary Wood Scholarship and placed first for woodwinds in both Performing Arts B.C. and Canada Fest in 2022. They aim to inspire curiosity and passion in their students, focusing on individual goals in a positive, inclusive environment.
